So, I remember drinking Batch 200 last fall after my awesome wife got me a bunch of it when I was still living in Illinois waiting for my house to sell. I really enjoyed that one. So, now I’m in Tampa full-time and getting ready (finally) to start my new career that I’m totally excited about (more on that later). So, tonight on a Saturday, I’m enjoying/celebrating Batch 300 from one of my favorite Florida breweries.
If you’ve been following along, you know my immense joy for Calusa’s beer. And since this site is currently dedicated to dark beer, why not throw down on this beast of a stout?
Batch 300 is an Imperial Sweet Stout with peanut butter, chocolate and lactose. My son-in-law, who is in the early stages of his home brewing obsession, is currently brewing a stout similar to this. So, of course, me being the good dude that I am, I plan on sending him one or two of these so he can compare. So let’s crack it!
Batch 300 pours black with a thin, nearly non-existent, tan head, which dissipates quickly. Swirling the beer in the tulip will reinvigorate the head briefly, making it a nice frothy head for a moment before rescinding to a thin ring around the inside of the glass.
Aroma is so savory with loads of what smells like creamy peanut butter…or chunky peanut butter. Trust me, there’s a truck load of peanuts here! Batch 300 is thick and luscious on the tongue with loads of peanut butter and sweet chocolate. It’s not too sweet, but the peanut butter perfectly pairs a slight bitterness and savoriness with the chocolate sweetness. Neither overpowers the other. It finishes slightly bitter with a hint of sweet chocolate and peanut butter bitterness.
I love a good peanut butter stout. Back in St. Louis, 4 Hands Brewing made one of the better ones called Absence of Light. But Batch 300 easily surpasses it. To me, it beats Moonbutter from Angry Chair, who are the kings of insanely sweet stouts down here in the Tampa area.
And can we talk about this fantastical artwork? That’s a nice homage to the movie 300. Well done! Once again, Calusa kills it. Cheers!
