Midnight Snack by Abomination Brewing

My next Tavour stout is from Abomination Brewing, who are located in East Stroudsburg, PA. They’re a contract brewer. So what does that mean? Abomination Brewing doesn’t have a place to call home. So they contract with other brewers to allow them to brew and bottle/can their beer on someone else’s equipment. They’re sometimes called Nomad Brewers because they never brew in the same place. So, this is a beer I wouldn’t normally have been able to get (although these guys do distribute), but Tavour allowed me to pick up this stout. Let’s crack it!

Abomination describes Midnight Snack as “brewed with lactose, oats, midnight wheat and aged on a ridiculous amount of locally sourced coffee, vanilla beans and pink frosted donuts!”

Well, I’m now intrigued. I love donuts, but my waistline hates them. In my experience donuts is a difficult flavor to get in beer. This is a pretty heavy beer according to Untappd so I’m eager to see how it is.

If so, you’ve probably noticed how black that oil is as it streams into your oil pan. Well, Midnight Snack looks like heavy gauge, overly used motor oil. Holy crap, it’s black, like ink in a glass. It just looks thick and syrupy as it’s being poured. The pour creates a slight dark caramel head. Uh oh…this is a beast. That head disappears rather quickly leaving nothing but the beer in the glass.

Aroma is sweet, almost dark fruity with a slight touch of coffee. Interesting smell for sure, and not what I expected. So let’s sip and see how it is.

img_2058I’ve read that people thought this beer was thin. Uh, no. It’s a full-bodied beer, thick and syrupy. It’s slick on the tongue, much like the motor oil it resembles. Unfortunately, I don’t get much of the sweetness on the palate. It’s got loads of dark chocolate (which I adore) and coffee. I don’t get much vanilla, but there is that subtle fried donuts taste at the back end. That’s interesting. I do wish this was a tad sweeter, but it’s almost like a Russian Imperial Stout on steroids. The dark chocolate notes on this are amazing. I am a HUGE fan of dark chocolate so I immediately like this beer. Could it be better? Maybe so, but it’s pretty darn tasty. I’m drinking this with lunch, and not anything that would pair well with Midnight Snack, but I am sweating now. This is a heavy beer and it’s causing me to perspire. That’s saying something. Whew. I may need a nap after this one.

I look forward to seeing what Abomination Brewing does in the future. Midnight Snack is a quality stout I thoroughly enjoyed. I do have another of these beers, and I’ll probably share it. Daddy’s getting sleepy, folks. Need to crank the air up a bit now. Damn.  🙂  Cheers!
