Cigar City is known for big, bold stouts, and this beer is no exception. I’ve had this on draft, but I wanted to get a bottle and see who they compare. Really, I just wanted a bottle of this so I could drink it, but hey, who’s counting?
A friend of mine recently said people don’t come to Cigar City for their stouts. I disagree. That’s pretty much the only reason I go to Cigar City. They experiment a lot. They’re not afraid to include different additives to their stouts. They don’t always do a lot of sweet stouts, but hey, I want to broaden my palate, too. So let’s crack it open!
Caffè Americano pours black with a nice, even dark tan head that slowly dissipates into a thin ring around the inside of the glass. Aroma is straight, bold coffee and slightly boozy. There’s a hint of dark chocolate in there as well. It’s actually a nice melding of espresso and dark chocolate.
Cigar City says this about Caffè Americano: “Bold, strong and dark, traditional caffe americano is made by adding water to espresso. Bold, strong and dark, Cigar City Brewing’s Caffe Americano is made by adding vanilla and Tampa-roasted espresso beans to a formidable Double Stout base.“
This stout is a full-bodied monster. It’s slick, like oil on the tongue. There’s a ton of coffee espresso (hence the IBUs). There’s a bit of dark chocolate on this as well. It has a bit of sweetness just before swallowing and then the burn of bitterness that lingers on the tongue long after. Wow! This is a beast. It’s a high gravity espresso stout. However, as this beer warms, the chocolate notes are more prevalent. There’s a bit of sweet chocolate now that it’s warmer. That’s interesting and very nice.
I like this beer a lot. It reminds me of Marshal Zhukov’s a bit with a load of espresso. I wonder what this would taste like if they doubled or tripled the amount of vanilla. It would be superb, but then the sweetness would probably overpower the espresso, which is why this beer exists. The bottle’s label references Buddy Brew Coffee, so, obviously that’s the espresso beans they used in this stout. Very nice.
So, this is yet another reason to go to Cigar City. Their stouts are unique, and Caffè Americano is a perfect example.
