So, this entire week has been dedicated to Triptych Brewing stouts. So, yes, we’re going in numerical order with these beers. I’ve already discussed 04 and 05 in previous blog posts (I’ll link them below). And this is the last for now. Because, Stout 06 is a “Strong Stout featuring Peruvian Cocoa Nibs.”
It pours exactly like the other stouts I’ve tried from Triptych. It’s dark with a nice tan head that dissipates quickly, leaving only a thin ring around the edge of the inside of the snifter. Swirling the beer in the glass only briefly reinvigorates the carbonation.
Aroma is bitter dark chocolate. It’s very similar to the aroma as the other two stouts, which is interesting and concerning. Because, Stout 06 is all bitter dark chocolate on the palate. Wow! If you’re a fan of bakers chocolate then go get this. There is an interesting underlying sweetness, which is strangely exactly like Because, Stout 04. It’s not the subtle cherry, but it’s an underlying sweetness. As I mentioned in the blog post concerning 05, I felt like all these beers had the same base. Now, I’m sure of it. The problem is that these beers are too similar. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good stouts. BUT, they’re nearly the same. Perhaps the adjuncts are not as prominent. I need to go back to Because, Stout 04 now and do a side-by-side with 06. Now, perhaps their intention was to make these beers similar, but to me, they’re TOO similar. Because, Stout 05 was all coffee, but I could still tell the base had that same underlying sweetness. Hell, maybe I’ll do a side-by-side with all three of these and compare. Keep checking my Instagram for those results (link below).
I’m not sure what to make of these stouts. I think if I would have tasted them on their own, I would love them more. However, having all three relatively close together, the taste was too similar.
Triptych is making quality beers in central Illinois, and these stouts are no exception. If you can find them, get them. One at a time, anyway. 🙂 Bear in mind I didn’t drink all these in the same day. I did it over a few days, but the similarities were still there and memorable.
