If you’ve been following along, you know my wife and I are big fans of Late Start Brewing. Tasty Tasy Yum Yums, a Raspberry and Cacao Berliner, is her favorite. Of course, I’m the stout guy and the few that I’ve had from them thus far have been stellar. Our friend at Ginger Beard Coffee put this beer back for us before it was sold out, and we finally got a chance to crack this open.
Nonsense doesn’t look dark when it pours. It’s not that “ink in a glass” dark as it’s pouring (I should have done a video but I clearly failed!). However, there’s no head in the glass. Nothing. Swirling the beer around the tulip does nothing to reinvigorate the carbonation. Wow…that’s saying something. It’s definitely a “dark as liquid night” beer after it’s poured, as you can see in the pick above.
Aroma is all pecans and cinnamon. It smells really sweet with a slight bite of coffee in there. It’s an interesting aroma. I think the pecans really make it stand out. Nonsense is a full-bodied beer, and it’s got a ton of sweet cinnamon on the palate with a touch of vanilla sweetness throughout. There’s some pecan in the middle, which is surprisingly prevalent. There’s a nice sharp bite, as is standard with a Russian Imperial Stout. There’s also a tad bit of dark fruit on the back end of this beast as well. What an interesting palate. There’s a ton of flavors in this, as you can tell. Wow, that’s impressive from this tiny brewery in downtown Tampa.
This is my third stout from Late Start, and I have been impressed with all of them. These guys are special. I look forward to more interesting stouts from these guys.
