Bamburana by Oskar Blues Brewery and Cigar City Brewing

I happened to be on the west side one afternoon at Whole Foods and it started pouring. Rain like a hurricane…to me. I know, I know. I’ve not seen a hurricane yet, but it was crazier than I’ve seen in Illinois. Well, I stopped into Cigar City to get a beer or two. The Yankees (ugh!) spring training game was canceled due to the storm so it seemed like a majority of the fans came here. I luckily got a seat at the bar and chose this monster.

I wondered how long it would take Cigar City to collaborate with Oskar Blues since they’re now part of the same team, so to speak. Well, here we are. Here’s the commercial description for this beer:

“This is Bamburana, a collaboration with Cigar City brewing in Tampa, FL. The beer is an imperial stout aged in whiskey and brandy barrels with figs, dates and Amburana wood spirals. “

IMG_1649Bamburana pours dark coffee black with a thick tan head that dissipates to a thin ring around the inside of the tulip. Swirling the beer reinvigorates the carbonation creating a thick frothy dark head.

Aroma is sweet and full of dark fruit…figs and dates. Oh, that smell is heavenly. There’s a boozy sweetness there as well. Wow! Maybe some cinnamon on the nose, too! One of the better aromas I’ve had from a stout at Cigar City. I generally am not a fan of the earthy, dark fruity aromas in stouts. I’ve encountered most of those in European stouts like Nøgne Ø’s Imperial Stout. So, for me, to enjoy this scent is surprising to me. Now my palate is interested so let’s tip it back.

This beer is thick and chewy. It’s full-bodied. There’s a truck load of cinnamon on the tongue with a slightly boozy back end. The cinnamon is perfectly balanced with the boozy burn. It’s sweet throughout, which is a shock compared to most of Cigar City’s stouts. Perhaps that’s the Oskar Blues influence? Not sure about that. I’ve never been a big fan of Oskar Blues, but this beer checks all the boxes. The Amburana spirals really make it interesting.  This is surprisingly good! I had low expectations for it, but I really dig this one.

I was interested to learn that this beer has been distributed, however, I’ve not seen any around here. Of course, I’ve not really been looking either. 🙂 This was a solid first collab effort between these two power house breweries. I look forward to more from this team.

Cheers!
