Every Saturday my wife goes to Ginger Beard Coffee in downtown Tampa. This coffee shop is located in a bar called The Pour House, which also houses a small micro brewery called Late Start Brewing. My wife has had a couple of Late Start beers, and she really enjoyed them so she was kind enough to pickup a bottle of this beer for me.
The Burglar pours an opaque coffee black with a thick caramel head that explodes toward the top of the tulip as it’s being poured. It almost looks like a nitro beer the way it gravitates toward the rim. There’s also nice lacing as this beer goes down.
Aromas of dark malt, coffee and molasses on the nose. Generally, I don’t like molasses or dark fruit in my stouts, but this one is somewhat different. It’s a pleasant aroma, which is unusual. Maybe my palate is changing…
The Burglar has a medium-thick mouthfeel, which is nice. It’s very chocolate-forward with a blast of coffee on the back end. There’s a slight boozy sweetness there as well, which is a nice touch, and a bit of a dark chocolate aftertaste, which I adore.
I love the artwork on this beer. This is my first Late Start beer, and I must say this is a winner. I look forward to trying more from these guys. They have a beer called Nonsense, which looks amazing. I hope to try that one soon. And if you’re into coffee, do yourself a favor and go to Ginger Beard. You will not regret it. Cheers!
