It’s early January as I write this, and I’m finally living in Tampa full time. I sold my house in southern Illinois and was allowed to come to Tampa a week early after training my replacement at my job. Right now, as I write this, I’m binge watching Travelers on Netflix with my awesome wife as my beloved Seahawks are getting run over by the hated Cowboys. So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s time for baseball season.
As we’re nearing the 2nd season finale of this fantastic Netflix original, I’ve decided to crack this beer open. My wife was in Illinois for Christmas when this beer was released in cans, but we have a Tampa connection who is an extremely good dude and hooked us up while she was gone. Thanks to Jay for this one.
Dissonance is Calusa Brewing’s flagship brown ale, a breakfast brown with coffee and cinnamon, and it might be the perfect breakfast beer. It pours an opaque coffee brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is all coffee. I previously wrote about another Calusa brown ale called Sonus a while back. I really enjoyed that beer, but it was a coffee and coconut combination.
If I was completely into drinking beer for breakfast, this would be the beer I would get behind. Tons of coffee on the tongue with a huge cinnamon backend. Drinking this beer cold really does a disservice to this brown ale as it’s slightly metallic on the backend. As it warms, the cinnamon really pops. Calusa describes Dissonance as “a marriage of whole roasted coffee beans and chocolate malt. A touch of saigon cinnamon adds a note of mystery to this compelling, drinkable full-flavored brown ale.”
I remember Sonus being a nice marriage of coffee and coconut, and when combined, gave off a nice cinnamon flavor. Dissonance is a fantastic brown ale as well. I’d love to try Sonus and Dissonance side-by-side and record the difference. The Barrel Aged version of Dissonance will be up soon. I’ve had it before, but it will be nice to see how it is out of the bottle. Hang tight, people, this season of Travelers just got really interesting! OMG the plot twists are crazy! Cheers!
