So, I mentioned how much I hate driving in an earlier blog post. Well, I hate it so much that I stopped off at Calusa Brewing on the way back from Funky Buddha today simply because they had put this BA stout on tap in honor of their inaugural Mixed Culture Invitational, which is tomorrow. Now, by the time this post is live, the beer fest will be over by at least a week. Regardless, I had to stop in and try this beer. So, after a traffic accident screwed up northbound I-75, and it took me 40 minutes to go nine miles, here I am. Damn, I’m tired. But beer awaits. Let’s get it on!
BA Sworn to the Dark is the 2017 version brewed with vanilla beans. This beer pours dark as night with a thin, dark caramel head that dissipates quickly into a thin ring around the snifter. Aroma is sweet whiskey, dark fruit and vanilla. Holy hell, this smells amazing. This is my first BA beer from Calusa, so let’s see how it stacks up.
This beer is thick with a full-bodied mouthfeel. It’s almost chewy. This beast is sweet with tasteful tones of whiskey and vanilla on the tongue. Damn, I keep thinking it’s boozy, but this beer is nearly perfect for a BA beer. The boozy taste is so perfectly matched with the dark, malted grains and the vanilla beans that I keep smacking my lips to get it all in my mouth. The whisky sweetness almost gives it a fruity taste that is quite pleasing. The taste of this beer is very similar to how Funky Buddha does barrel aging, which I completely enjoy. The barrel is subtle and part of the experience, not so in your face. I love that character in a barrel aged beer.
So, now that I’ve had a few stouts from this fantastic brewery, it’s safe to say these guys know what they’re doing. I can deal with the drive to this place. Calusa is fast becoming my go to brewery in southwest Florida. I cannot wait to try out their sours tomorrow at the Mixed Culture Invitational. Should be a good time, and I’m sure I’ll write up something on it in the coming days. Cheers!
