Driving sucks. I hate it. Obviously when you drive 16 hours to your new home because you’re too cheap to hire a moving company, well, I gotta deal with it but I don’t have to like it. In January my wife and I drove 19 hours to Funky Buddha for the Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Festival. We literally were in Florida for less than 24 hours and then drove home. Yeah, that’s how we roll. We drove back down to Ft. Lauderdale in June for Funky Buddha’s 5th Anniversary party and had a great time. But the 19 hour drive sucked balls.
When I was younger (like pre-driving Phil), I did a David Lee Roth off the roof of my buddy’s house. I landed flat on my tailbone. My ass has hurt ever since. I’m sure I broke my tailbone but never had it checked out. Alcohol may have been involved, which is why I never mentioned it to my parents. So driving is especially torturous for me. Driving long distances really is a pain in my ass, literally. So, what do I do? I spent four hours in the car on the way to Funky Buddha today to drink two beers. TWO! And then I drove back three hours and stopped at Calusa in Sarasota. Yeah, my ass is killing me, but damn, the beer sure was tasty. It all balances out in the end.
If there’s one thing I can say about Funky Buddha, it’s that they do Barrel Aged beers the way I like them. Some people love their BA beers with a ton of bourbon or whatever barrel is used in the process. I do not. I like that barrel to compliment the original flavor of the beer and enhance it into something completely next level. So, given the opportunity to try this bad boy on draft, you can bet I didn’t say no.
Barrel Aged Save Some Room for Later pours a deep brown with a light tan head. For this beer, there’s some head retention, which is nice. It leaves pretty healthy lacing in the snifter as well. It’s uber sweet on the nose, with notes of chocolate and coconut and the subtleties of the barrel. BOOM! Once again, they do BA beers the way I like.
Bourbon sweetness on the tongue mixes with the coconut and makes this beer really pop–cold or warming. The chocolate is subtle here with the bourbon overpowering it a bit. This is very similar to Last Snow actually, with a slight hint of bourbon sweetness. And before you think it, no it’s not like Last Buffalo in the Park (review coming soon!), which is the barrel-aged version of Last Snow. It’s close, I’ll give them that. I would like more chocolate from this so it’s not so similar. Regardless, this is a solid BA brown ale. I can’t wait to compare this with Calusa’s BA Imperial Dissonance. It’s on now, son!
I do have a bottle of the non-barrel aged version of this beer, which I’m itching to try and compare it to the Angry Chair’s Chocolate Cupcake Stout. I’ll review it soon enough and cross-reference all these beers for comparison. 🤔🤔🤔
