I feel like I’ve gained 10 lbs this week. My wife started Weight Watchers in January and proceeded to lose nearly 80 lbs. I did it with her but didn’t formally start Weight Watchers until June. I’ve now lost around 50 lbs. We did all this while still drinking the yummy craft beer we love. That’s the beauty of Weight Watchers. You can eat McDonald’s and still lose weight. However, it’s all in the name of moderation. This week I don’t feel like I’ve moderated very well. I’ve drank too much every day. My wife has worked some weird hours this week so I’ve been on my own most of the time except late at night.
I just drove to Ft. Lauderdale, spent two hours at Funky Buddha and then drove home. However, I did make a quick pit stop at Calusa (reviews coming soon!). I left the house at 6:30 a.m. and got home at around 9 p.m. Ugh! It’s been a long day. However, I got home and my wife wanted to crack open this bottle. So, who am I to deny her one of her favorites–especially when I get a chance to review it formally?
Wide Awake It’s Morning is the Imperial version of Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. It adds some thickness to the mouth feel and gravity to the ABV. It’s a tad more smokey than MBCP as well. So, for the full joy, let’s get on this thang!
Wide Awake It’s Morning pours jet black in the glass with a thin caramel-colored head. Not much head retention here as it fades to a slight ring around the edge of the snifter. There’s a ton of maple on the nose and maybe a pinch of smoke.
This beer definitely has a thicker mouth feel than Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. The viscosity is quite high on this one! It’s a chewy beer. There’s a ton of maple on the tongue and some salty smoke. It’s uncanny how much this beer tastes like bacon. I’d love to try some nice, crispy bacon with this beast. This would be a helluva breakfast beer if I was in to day drinking! The maple is all over the place, from the beginning to the end. It’s a sugar trip, for sure. This is a sweet and salty monster of a porter that drinks like a stout. This seems to be the new thing now: porters that have characteristics of a stout. This has a high ABV and the stout mouth feel, so it definitely doesn’t feel like the standard porter. If you’re not a fan of sweet stouts, you will NOT like this one. It’s straight up maple sugar, which I completely enjoy. And, no, this beer is not Weight Watchers approved.
