EDITOR’S NOTE: Calusa Brewing recently canned this beer and the ABV is now higher than this initial review. All relevant Beer Stats will be updated at the end of this post.
It’s a Tuesday here in Tampa, FL, as I’m writing this. I just got back from running some errands, and I’m getting through my honey-do list as my wife slaves away at a job she actually loves. So, what do I do? Throw down on some Calusa, of course!
I try to stay plugged into the south Florida beer scene, even when I’m back in Illinois. So I’m constantly asking my lovely wife to make rounds for me. This was not a hard sell, I can tell you that. If you read my review of Batch 200 by Calusa, then you’d know how we came to visit on a whim and ended up loving the place. So, as I keep an eye out for their tap list from 1,000 miles away, I was jacked to see this beer go on tap and for growler fills. I can’t thank my wife enough for taking one for the team and making the trek to Sarasota a couple weeks ago and getting 64 oz of this beer in a Calusa Hydro Flask. Oh my.
Calusa describes Mountain & Sea as a “Caribbean inspired stout brewed with coconut, coffee, hazelnut, caramel and lactose sugar. Scratching your dessert itch in a fun, yet classy way.” Well they’re spot on. This beer pours a “black coffee” brown (sounds weird, doesn’t it?) with a nice tan head that dissipates quickly, leaving a nice ring around the edge of the snifter. There’s a nice coffee aroma on the nose. You know when you brew fresh hot coffee in the morning? That initial coffee aroma when it’s percolating, that’s what this smells like. Oh man, this aroma is perfect. There’s a hint of coconut in there as well, slightly sweet. The aroma is similar to Last Snow by Funky Buddha, but better. Damn, I can’t believe I just wrote that!
Mountain & Sea is full-bodied. It’s a thick, viscous beast with a nice creamy mouthfeel. It’s very much coffee forward, and then the sweetness of hazelnut and caramel explode in your mouth. The coconut is layered throughout, leaving a pleasing aftertaste of coffee and coconut. And the hits just keep on coming! Damn, this is a tasty beer. I really need to get some work done this afternoon, so if I continue to drink this heavy monster, I’ll be asleep. Unfortunately, someone keeps filling up my glass…my wife is going to kill me if I don’t get some things hung up around here. Ok, enough for now. Holy hazelnut! Get to Calusa and drink this before it goes off tap for a while!
