I love my wife. As I sit here in cold, rainy southern Illinois and contemplate another night of being 1,000 miles away from her, I’ve decided to pop this beer. She, of course, is already living in Tampa, FL and I’m still here in the pit that is Illinois smack dab in the middle of selling my house. My wife bought this for me a few weeks ago before I went down to Florida at the end of September. They happened to have a few left and she was able to snag one. She also picked up a crowler of Insulin Resistance that night, which I quite enjoyed. She knows me so well. She knows my obsession with sweet stouts, which makes Angry Chair a perfect brewery for me. Some people find their stouts too sweet. I get it. They’re not for everyone. But they are for me. So, let’s get to it.
I tasted Imperial Awakening on tap at Angry Chair when I picked up a couple bottles of Moon Butter in September. That day, I had Moon Butter, Insulin Resistance and this beer. This was my favorite of the day. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all extremely good, better than good. But this beer was just phenomenal.
Imperial Awakening is a 10.5% sweet stout brewed with coffee. But to top it off, they threw in some cinnamon. I ain’t gonna lie, I love cinnamon in a stout. Abraxas, anyone? Awakening pours an inky black in the glass with a thin dark tan head. As it warms, there’s a ton of cinnamon on the nose with a hint of coffee. Damn, this beer smells amazing. The mixture of cinnamon and coffee is perfect. It mixes the bitter with the sweet so well. Swirling the beer in the snifter leaves a nice oily lacing in the glass.
Loads of cinnamon on the tongue at first taste and then the blast of coffee bitterness hits you. Coffee bitterness on the back end and just when you think it’s gone the cinnamon sweetness explodes. This is decadent. Jesus hell, Angry Chair knows dark beer. Did I mention I love my wife?
