The Effing Brew Company is the closest thing to a local brewery in my current neck of the woods of southern Illinois. I’ve had a few of their beers before, and as I’m hanging out today in Effingham to get some more things for my house renovation at Menards, I thought I’d stop in and try one I haven’t tasted yet. The EBC is a brewpub, offering an assortment of really good food along with their own hand-crafted beer. They also offer an assortment of guest taps, which is nice if you’re in the mood for something different.
Beyond the Darkness is a basic American stout. It pours deep brown with a thin, tan head that dissipates quickly, leaving a slight tan ring around the edge of the glass. Aroma is coffee with some slight sweetness but it’s muted. It’s roasty on the tongue with notes of coffee and some sugary notes of toffee as well. It’s a slightly bitter stout up front and has a bit of roasty, dark malty bitterness on the back end.
This is a solid stout, nothing earth shattering, but it is good. It’s nice to see a local brewery open up in my area, but I’ll be in Tampa soon and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to get to know that scene intimately…take that however you want. 🙂
