Craft beer is huge in the greater Chicago, IL area. Ok, huge may be an understatement. There are so many craft breweries in the windy city that brewers really have to do something special to stand out. Pipeworks Brewing is one such beer maker. Their beers are often highly sought after, not only in Chicago, but all over the country.
Admittedly, I’ve not had much of their dark beer, save their black IPA, Close Encounter, until recently. I was in Chicago for a conference with a co-worker recently and we went to several cool craft beer joints and found some Pipeworks offerings on tap. Pipeworks doesn’t have a tap room, only a bottle shop but they do distribute to several parts of the country, including Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Hyper Dog is a chocolate milk stout with coffee provided by Dark Matter Coffee, a coffee roaster also from Chicago. This sexy beast comes in at 7.5% ABV and sports a nice frothy tan head that dissipates rather quickly. Notes of cinnamon and vanilla on the nose, which make this a very pleasant aromatic beer. And if you’ve been following my blog, you know I’m a big fan of vanilla in my beer, so this is a nice surprise.
Hyper Dog is a medium to thick bodied beer, almost slick in the mouth. While this beer is brewed with vanilla, I don’t get any vanilla on the tongue. But I do get coffee, and it is glorious. The chocolate has to be dark because it’s bitter, like a Russian Imperial Stout bitter. However, there is some chocolate sweetness just on the back end as the beer slides down your throat. Damn, this is a good one. I absolutely love the after taste of coffee and Hershey’s chocolate…seriously. Damn. As this beer warms, it gets a bit better. The flavors really pop. Pipeworks clearly knows what they’re doing. I think I paid $8.99 for this 22 oz bomber and it tastes like a more expensive beer. Well done Pipeworks, well done. If you see this in your local craft beer store, do yourself a favor and grab it. You won’t be disappointed.
